Get The Most Out Of Every Walk

Whether it’s your first Mentor Walk or your fifth, it’s normal to feel unsure. You might have questions like “Should I sign up?” “How can I strike up a conversation?” “What if my question is too small?” or even “What if my question is too complicated?” These are all valid and common questions our mentees come in with.

Every Mentor Walk is your chance to take another step to move your career forward, get inspired, and build meaningful connections. Each walk is different, a new mentor to learn from, a fresh mix of mentees to meet, and different insights to take away. That’s why it’s key to make the most of each experience. But if you’ve ever left a walk wishing you’d made stronger connections or asked better questions (or if you’re worried you won’t know how), you’re not alone.

Here’s how to get the most value from your walk—before, during, and after—based on what’s worked for others who’ve been there before.

1. Be ready to have a career conversation - big or small!

The best walks start with knowing what you want to want to learn, hear, and know from your mentor. You don’t need to have it all figured out—just be ready to ask or discuss something that matters to you. It could be to talk through a career crossroad, validating your direction, workshopping where you're at, how to work with others or through situations, learning and upskilling, or even to simply hear your mentor’s story. This is your time to walk away with what you need.

TIP: Your "small" challenge might be someone else’s “big” and vice versa. Whatever it is, put it on the table.

2. Feel free to ask the same question more than once

Each mentor brings a fresh perspective, even on the same issue. If you’re stuck on something, try asking the same question at multiple walks. You’ll gather different takes, practical ideas, and the next step that feels right with you.

TIP: You’ll also get a different view from the new mentees you walk with each time.

3. Practice your networking before and after the walk

The walk starts not when you're walking—it starts when you arrive. Take the chance to connect with mentees and mentors before and after the walk time. It can feel awkward at first, but remember: every woman is here to connect. Start by introducing yourself to someone new.

TIPS: A few simple openers:

  • What made you come to Mentor Walks today?

  • Is this your first walk or have you done one before? Then you could follow up, with what they might expect, or what their last walk was like.

  • Have you had a mentor or coach before? How was it?

  • Which mentors are you most excited about?

  • What industry are you currently in? What’s it like?

For after the walk:

  • What did you think of today’s conversation?

  • Was today’s walk what you expected? Why or why not?

  • What was your key takeaway?

  • What do you think you’ll do with what you’ve learnt?

  • Would you like to connect on LinkedIn?

4. Maximize the group magic

Mentor Walks is group mentoring for a reason. You’re walking with other mentees— so collaborate. Listen to their questions. Build on their ideas. Offer encouragement when it feels right. The power of the walk isn’t just in the mentors—it’s in the group.

TIP: When you tap into your group’s superpower, good things can happen! We’ve had mentees become outside work buddies, trade skills, start side hustles, make introductions to others who can help and  recommend the next talk, book, event, etc to go to.

5. Keep the conversation going

Mentors aren’t obliged to stay in touch, but many are happy to connect. If they offer, take them up on it. Add them on LinkedIn, drop them a thank you or an update.

TIP: Most importantly: let them know how their advice helped. Mentors love hearing what worked and what you're doing next.

6. Pass it on

One of the most powerful things you can do after a walk? Tell another woman about it. Share your experience. Invite her to join next time. You never know who needs  that nudge or bit of support

This is your space to learn, connect, and grow. Whether it’s your first or your fifth, showing up with intention (and a little prep) can make all the difference.
